The Problem

Who (Will) Let The Dogs Out?

Many dog owners in Israel still rely on Facebook groups to find a dog walker.
The process can be time-consuming, involving extensive searching, background checks, and efforts to build trust — and even then, it’s not always safe for either the pet or the owner.

Opportunity:

The pet-care market is expected to surpass $250B globally by 2030, with dog-walking services representing one of the fastest-growing on-demand categories.

Yet user research revealed a consistent gap: low trust and emotional disconnect in existing platforms.

Doggochi’s business opportunity lies in offering a trust-first, emotionally engaging alternative — combining gamified design and smart automation.

This approach not only improves user satisfaction but also opens pathways for:

  • Subscription-based recurring walks

  • In-app loyalty rewards and upselling (treats, accessories, training)

  • Local business partnerships (pet stores, vets, groomers)

The Solution

Connecting Dog Owners With Dog Walkers

In Controlled Environment

After identifying that most dog-walking apps feel transactional and impersonal, I wanted to design something that feels alive and provide clear backup processes to address the gaps in current solutions.

Doggochi combines a service platform with a digital pet system to keep users emotionally engaged while ensuring reliability.

Owners can book verified walkers in a few taps, track walks in real time, and receive status updates through their Doggochi pet avatar.

If a walker cancels or doesn’t show up, the system automatically activates predefined backup policies — reassigning another verified walker, notifying the owner immediately, and preventing missed walks.

The result is not just a cute interface, but a structured experience with safety nets, transparency, and emotional reward. Doggochi creates a trustworthy and consistent dog-walking experience — practical, secure, and genuinely enjoyable.

Users can choose to schedule walks on a weekly basis for added convenience.

Since many walkers prefer handling multiple dogs at once, owners also have the option to allow group walks — offered at a discounted rate — or to request solo walks for their pet.

To build trust and encourage repeat use, the system prioritizes familiar walkers in search results. Users can also bookmark preferred walkers, streamlining future bookings and fostering long-term relationships between owners and caregivers.

To increase users’ sense of safety and control, I added three customizable backup policies — allowing users to choose their preferred fallback strategy ensures they remain confident that their dog’s walk will proceed smoothly, even in unexpected situations.

The Impact

Increase User Confidence & Emotional Connection

The simplified booking flow reduces confusion, while the Tamagotchi-inspired doggos help users feel more connected to their pets.

There is no need to search for strangers to walk your beloved dog now; no more uncontrolled risks.
By introducing three transparent backup policies — Manual Fetch, Smart Fetch, and Pack Assist — I addressed one of the biggest trust issues in pet care apps: last-minute cancellations.

Why 3 options for cancellation policies?

Most dog-walking or service-based apps offer only one universal cancellation policy. However, when it comes to someone’s pet, trust and peace of mind - these are not one-size-fits-all.

So I chose to introduce three different cancellation policies to give users more flexibility and a stronger sense of control, and show that the app respects different comfort levels and routines.

From a business perspective, this flexibility helps reduce frustration, improves trust in the platform, and increases the chance of users returning rather than abandoning the app after a bad experience.

The Design Process

Getting Bigger Picture & Measurable Success Metrics

The funnel highlights how Doggochi converts emotional engagement into measurable retention. By combining functional reliability (backup policies, tracking) with playful design (Doggochi mascot, microinteractions), I want to ensure the app nurtures user trust and encourages repeat use. The Funnel helped me to visualize and understand a "big picture" of the app. It was essential for me to understand the current and future direction of the product growth before diving into design.

The Design Process

First Drafts & Usage of AI

I started with simple sketches to visualize what I wanted to include on each screen.

I also used ChatGPT to explore references, analyze competitors, and research industry standards to make sure my design aligned with best practices.

In my earlier projects, this research process could take 2–3 hours. By using AI, I can now make it much more efficient — quickly summarize information, collect relevant insights, and create clear checklists to follow.

The Design Iteration

Iterating On Information Architecture

During the iteration phase, I refined the overall information hierarchy to improve clarity and consistency across screens. I adjusted font sizes and weights to create a more distinct visual hierarchy, making it easier for users to scan and understand each section.

To maintain visual unity, I replaced mismatched icons with a cohesive set from a single icon pack. Layouts were also slightly adjusted to create better balance and alignment, ensuring that navigation and key actions remain intuitive and visually consistent throughout the flow.

I really loved to work on this project and strongly believe that it has a potential to grow into real-life product. It also taught me a lot. Here are some of my takeaways that I will bring to my future works:

  • UI: Scary Big Fonts Are Not So Scary.

At the beginning, I was hesitant to use large fonts — especially when designing for a mobile app. However, I kept feeling that the visual hierarchy wasn’t clear enough. So, I explored similar designs for reference, conducted a bit of research, and decided to iterate on my layout. I increased the header font size to strengthen hierarchy. Testing the design using Figma mirroring on my own phone also helped me a lot.

  • UX x Business Aspect: Consider Second Side While Designing For The First.

Although I focused only on the customer-side user flow, I learned the importance of considering the walker-side during the design process. Every action taken by the customer directly affects the walker’s experience, and both are equally important users of the system. This realization helped me ensure that each feature I designed delivers value and usability for both sides of the app.

  • UX x Business Aspect: Make Sure You See a Bigger Picture.

This insight directly connects to the previous one. Creating the funnel allowed me to see the full structure of the app and understand how different parts interact. If I had focused only on a single user flow, I would have missed many small but important details that influence both the user experience and the overall product design.

But for me, Tamagotchi means childhood.

It’s that moment when you dream of having a dog, but your parents aren’t ready for the idea—so they hand you a small plastic “egg” with a virtual pet inside, to prove you can take care of it. You feed it, pet it, love it, and learn what responsibility feels like.

All those kids who went through that tiny trial grew up. And now, many of them finally have a real dog—a true friend.

Doggochi is for them. It’s a gentle bridge between those childhood dreams and the grown-up joy of caring for a living, loyal companion.
